Latest castoff denies dating 'very special musical friend' Haley Reinhart.
By Gil Kaufman
When Casey Abrams ended up standing next to Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery on "American Idol" on Thursday night, he had a feeling the end was nigh. Then, when Lusk was sent to safety, well, that was all she wrote.
"Everyone was just so incredible [on Wednesday night]. ... My performance was pretty good, but seeing Jacob kill it and then seeing Haley kill it, seeing Scotty and Lauren kill it and Durbin obviously ... it just made me feel like, 'These guys are incredible. These guys could carry the show. I don't really need to be here, so if I go home tomorrow, I'm prepared,' " he said of the thoughts going through his head after Wednesday night's Carole King performance show.
But, facing a deluge of questions about the status of his relationship with frequent duet buddy (and reported offscreen paramour) Haley Reinhart during a call with reporters on Friday morning (April 29), Abrams made sure to clear up the most important bit of business about the rest of his career first, saying that the moment the two shared at the end of his final performance on Thursday night was unplanned and not a sign of anything other than good times. "I was saying goodbye to my very special musical friend," he explained of their eye-lock, emphasizing that they are not, and never were, a couple.
Abrams said he was "feeling really good, actually" about things on Friday morning and that he never really got too upset about the results. "I felt really good even afterwards. Maybe I'll break down crying some other time. But right now, I feel really good about what happened last night."
In his typical fashion, Abrams went out with a bang, not only having his "Haley moment," but also kissing audience members and the judges and rolling around onstage. "What was going through my mind was just, 'Make this good,' " he said of his jubilant goodbye. "I was completely on random mode. I didn't plan on ending up on Haley; it just happened that way. Nothing was planned."
Though we saw him play acoustic and electric bass, piano, guitar and melodica on the show, Abrams revealed that he also dabbles in drums, sitar, accordion, cello and clarinet. When it comes to how he might corral all that prodigious instrumental talent into a live show, he said it would likely bear the title, "Pure Craziness" and encompass everything from hard rock to smooth jazz, much like his first post-"Idol" album.
With a number of shaky vocal performances over the course of his tenure on the show, Casey said that, even with his long background in studying and playing music, being on "Idol" has done a lot for his confidence as a performer. "Everything. It's done every single thing," he said. "I used to not like to sing in public, and now I feel like I'm singing a little bit too much. Now I'll sing in the hallways with random people I don't even know. Maybe that's a bad thing, but I just feel a lot more comfortable onstage, and I feel like I can do anything onstage now."
Although the judges and mentor Jimmy Iovine had warned Casey to dial back the growling and scowling after his take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the singer had fallen back into his old ways in recent weeks, begging the question of whether he was purposely ignoring their counsel. "It is kind of how I sing when I don't think about it," he explained. "I think that's a good place to be when you don't think about how you sing. ... It's a gray area. It's hard to define what's a good growl and what's a bad growl."
Like other contestants who have benefited from the judges' save in the past, Abrams said he felt the pressure of having the panel bail him out and dedicated himself to working even harder because it would have been "really embarrassing" to go home the very next week. That said, Abrams admitted he never expected to get as far as he did, or win, and feels pretty great about making it to the top six.
Asked for his final thoughts, Abrams said simply, "Don't take yourself too seriously. Take music seriously, but not yourself."

Adding to the slew of celebrity-fronted scents, Katy Perry launched her new "Purr" fragrance in Melbourne, Australia earlier today (April 30).
The "E.T." singer looked radiant as she posed with her cat-shaped perfume bottle, wearing a shiny black and purple dress and black peep toe Christian Louboutin pumps.
Meanwhile, Katy, who is married to British funnyman Russell Brand, has just filed suit against Australia's "NW" magazine after they printed a claim that the she was involved in an "intimate relationship" with record producer Benny Blanco.
Perry filed legal papers against the publication earlier this week, which read, "By reason of the publication of the article the plaintiff (Perry) has been gravely injured in her reputation and feelings (and) has suffered distress, embarrassment and humiliation."

Gary Barlow, lined up to be a judge on The X Factor, is no Simon Cowell
Gary Barlow is said to be in "advanced talks" to replace Simon Cowell as a judge on the next series of The X Factor. Mr Nice replaces Mr Nasty is how they're billing it. Of course, Cowell's real value to the show is not his nastiness, but the fact that he's the boss. Having the boss on camera is like having your headmaster inexplicably enter the classroom and stand cryptically in the corner, hands behind his back, wordlessly terrifying the bejeezus out of teacher and pupils alike. Cowell is not just judging the acts but the judges and the audience too (and perhaps, yes, humanity as a whole). Will we ever again witness that look of intense discomfort in Dannii Minogue's eyes once her T-shirted master has disappeared and taken his Sword Of Damocles with him? No. It will be a free-for-all, with Barlow cast as the hapless supply teacher. There is no hope for ITV now. Unless someone can dig out Peter Sisson's number and make him an offer he can't refuse, of course.

'The album is dope. That's all I can tell you about it,' Denaun Porter tells Mixtape Daily.

Behind the Beats: Denaun Porter, Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh
Eminem is looking to thrill hip-hop fans once again. Earlier this week, it was announced that Shady Records will release a joint EP featuring Em himself and fellow Detroit lyricist Royce Da 5'9", under the group moniker Bad Meets Evil. But fans aren't the only ones excited about the upcoming project.
Producers Denaun Porter, Mobb Deep's Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh have all been tapped to provide beats for the project and seem to be pretty pumped for the final product, which is set to drop June 14.
"The album is dope. That's all I can tell you about it," said Porter when Mixtape Daily caught up with him at his Detroit studio. (Big Mixtape shout-out to photographer Patrick Daly.) The idea for a Bad Meets Evil EP first came about while Porter and Royce were working on Royce's solo album.
"We had one song and it turned into, 'Yo, what do you think about getting Em on this record?' " Denuan recalled. Soon, Royce and Em were bouncing ideas back and forth, and more producers were eventually brought into the fold.
Havoc, who also worked on Eminem's Recovery, submitted a number of tracks to the Shady camp, but initially had no idea what Em and Royce were cooking up. "A couple of months ago I got hit up and they told me that they're using another track for some future project," he said. "So I found out along with everybody else what it was actually for, because they like to keep things top-secret."
West Coast beatsmith DJ Khalil has been a longtime fan of the Bad Meets Evil duo and has fond memories of buying Em and Royce's first collaborative 1999 single, "Nothin' to Do." "I remember buying the 12-inch back in the day when I was DJ'in'," he said. "It's like a classic; I still have the vinyl."
Bangladesh, like Havoc, didn't learn that he was going to be on the EP until recently. "I ain't know that [Eminem] even had this beat, I didn't even know he liked the beat. I ain't know I was gonna be on this EP until probably like two weeks ago."
The producers couldn't say much in terms of song detail, but Bangladesh did confirm that his track has a vocal sample in the hook, while Havoc said his beat has an eerie feel and sounds like, "You're going down a dark hall with a whole bunch of monks just screamin' at you."
Denuan, an original member of D12 and a longtime friend and collaborator of both Em and Royce, is perhaps the most thrilled about the upcoming Bad Meets Evil project. "I was happy to see it because I thought the songs that they did back in the day was dope."

Could Prince William and Kate Middleton steal the celebrity crown from David and Victoria? Of course not
At this pivotal time for our nation, there are certain questions I am asked more than any others in my formal capacity as Sometime Writer of a Page Designed To Be Taken Desperately Seriously. Perhaps the most common one: "Is Alex Reid still a celebrity?" (The short answer: it's complicated. We're going to have to deal with it in full next week.) Second only to that inquiry, however, is the question: "What does the royal wedding mean for the Beckhams?"
Not for them personally, you understand ? thanks to some of David's typically empty public utterances, we know it's nice for them to be invited, but that Victoria's a bit concerned about how she'll look because she's pregnant. No, the question is what the royal wedding means for the Beckhams as a concept. Are they up or down on the great media barometer, that instrument that harnesses journalism's most abundant commodity ? laziness ? and uses it to rate whether or not someone is worth giving a few column inches of toss about? What are the implications for the celebrity community of which the Beckhams are emblematic? And are Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrities?
We shall deal with the latter first: of course they aren't. Only if their marriage starts going wrong, and Kate acquires Princess Di's world-class ? galaxy-class ? media skills, could they develop the type of plotlines that would elevate them into celebrities (and it would be an elevation). Otherwise, a fevered interest in them will remain the preserve of those people who lack the imagination to mind about celebrity Scientologists or a fracturing Middle East ? people in whose company no one interesting would care to spend any time.
Now, as millions get caught up in the pageantry and pissups on the Big Day, you will very likely hear some declare that a new royal dawn has broken, and that something fundamental has changed ? and they will very likely be the same people who, after Diana's death, wept in the streets, and on the whole behaved in a very Southern European manner and then got frightfully embarrassed about it afterwards.
Indeed, over the past few weeks you may have heard the loftily touted view that the royal marriage will result in celebrities having their triple-A ratings downgraded. Consider royal author and "constitutional expert" Hugo Vickers, who declared: "I think there's a very good opportunity for William and Catherine to replace people like the Beckhams as the focus of young Britain."
To which I'm afraid the only seemly response is: DO. ME. A. FAVOUR.
I have no idea whether Hugo, like those high court judges of yesteryear, has never heard of the Beatles, but he will certainly be familiar with Oscar Wilde ? a man who truly understood celebrity. So I must ask Hugo to turn to Lost in Showbiz set text The Picture of Dorian Gray, specifically the moment at which Lord Henry declares of the eponymous antihero: "You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found."
This column has always felt that the test to determine if someone is ? however fleetingly ? a celebrity is to ask oneself whether one can imagine these words being spoken of them. "You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found." Now, can you possibly imagine anyone ever breathing such a thing at Prince William? Well of course you can't. It is, however, eminently possible to imagine it being whispered, spellbound, at David Beckham (perhaps by his enthralled dandy friend, Mr Tom Cruise, but it doesn't especially matter).
Hang on, some might say, only a few paragraphs ago you were making unfavourable reference to David's empty public utterances. But you see, none of that matters either. David Beckham can appear as empty as he likes ? indeed, Dorian Gray as a character is marginally less developed than supporting members of Brentwood-based repertory company The Only Way Is Essex. That is precisely the point. As Lord Henry continues of Dorian: "I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art."
And so with our Beckhams, who have never done anything more meaningful than simply be the Beckhams (please don't bring up David's "heroics" in the Greece game; it is hysterically undignified to apotheosise qualifying matches). But they are proper celebrities, upon those whom Hugo calls "young Britain" are properly focused ? and that's before we get on to big hitters like your Britneys, your Gagas, and others to whom the world belongs for a season.
Set next to those malfunctioning, mega-watted personages, I'm afraid there is precisely nothing to intrigue us yet in a balding air-sea rescue drone and a neo-Sloane in sensible LK Bennett heels. Harsh? Certainly. But that, my darlings, is showbiz ? and long may it reign over us.

A day removed from their fairytale nuptials, Prince William and the newly-titled Duchess Catherine have made their official wedding portraits available for public viewing.
Certainly quite the elegant couple, Will and Kate posed for the trio of photos - with the lovely pair surrounded by their flower girls and young ushers in one adorable shot.
The bride and groom also stood tall for a couple's portrait at the Buckingham Palace locale while flanked by the royal family in the third regal offering.
Dressed in their ceremony garb, Miss Middleton confirmed speculation while dressed in a Sarah Burton designed gown while William donned a Royal Navy Number One Dress uniform.
